The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (Bluefield University, 2015)

I was super excited to costume this show as a massive Narnia fan. I really enjoyed the Disney film costumes and was determined to recreate them for my main actors. As a further challenge, my budget was extremely small, and I was working with all children and their families from our local youth theater.

Aslan's mane was a labor of love. It was made with several different colors and textures of yarn, in different layers. A fellow student and I spent an entire day tying on bunches of yarn and brushing them out with a cat brush during a snowstorm!

Susan's purple dress was made from a bedsheet with a scrap of gold fabric for the bodice detail. I could not find striped purple fabric in my budget so the stripes were drawn on! Once again, this dress was draped on my actor.

Lucy's dress was made from a number of thrifted items with the bodice motif drawn on using fabric marker. I spent a lot of time in thrift stores looking for sheets, curtains, large coats, and other garments that I could feasibly cut child-sized pattern pieces from. Just like in the film, her sleeves were suede material and the matching skirt cotton-linen.

The boys had simple tabards trimmed with braid. The rest of the main cast had items pulled from stock. Ensemble actors were given a Pinterest board of ideas and the vibe I was going for, and asked to come up with a costume together with their parents. I think they did pretty good!
